A mala is a prayer chain consisting of 54 or 108 high swinging beads or cores. Mantras or prayers, which are usually recited at least 108 times on the mala, can be easily counted with the help of these prayer chains. In Japa meditation (mantra recitation) you hold the mala in your right hand and count the recited mantras with your middle finger and thumb. But the mala is not only a practical counting aid, because with every mantra you charge your powerful mala with additional energy. After some time it becomes a protective energy object. A mala should be worn as much as possible on the body, preferably around the neck, and not be touched by another person. Malas are made from a wide variety of beads or seeds.
